Holocaust Memorial Day should be supported by all

3.14.51pm GMT Thu 26th Jan 2006

Speaking on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day and commenting on the Muslim Council of Britain's recommendation that it should be replaced by a broader EU Genocide Memorial Day, Liberal Democrat European justice spokeswoman and MEP for London Baroness Sarah Ludford said:

"A special occasion for remembering the Holocaust, a unique event in its horror and evil, is vital. It is fitting that we specifically remember the victims of this crime against humanity."

"I am sad that Sir Iqbal Sacranie, a man whom I respect, feels that Holocaust Memorial Day conveys a 'frankly racist notion that some people are to be regarded as being more equal than others' I believe on the contrary that it serves to remind all of us what can happen to any minority community when hatred and intolerance take hold."

"The 'one person can make a difference' theme this year must spur us on to fight racism and bigotry with renewed vigour both in the EU and abroad, for example in combatting prejudice against Muslims or Roma, or ethnic cleansing in Darfur."
